Licensing questions

What is the "number of simultaneous users", which I have to take into account when buying UserGate?

The licensing parameter: "number of simultaneous users" is the maximum number of your LAN users who can work on the Internet at the same time (regardless of the number of launched Internet applications on their computers).

I have completed the purchase procedure, but didn't get the registration key. What do I do now?

When buying UserGate online, please make sure you enter your correct e-mail address. E-mails with registration codes are sent out automatically. Also, this email may not arrive at your Inbox because of spam filters used by some e-mail services. Additionally please keep in mind that it may take up to several hours to process your order. However if you didn't receive the registration key within 24 hours please send an e-mail to sales@entensys.com, that has your name, date and the time of your payment. IMPORTANT: your e-mail should be sent from the e-mail address you specified in the purchase form. After we verify your purchase information, we will send you the registration key.

I cannot register UserGate, because the ‘Register’ button is not active. Why is that?

Most likely the reason the ‘Register’ button is not active is the UserGate Administrator module is not connected to a UserGate server. Make sure that UserGate server is launched and click on the ‘Connect’ button.

How do I upgrade UserGate to a newer version?

Download the UserGate installer. Make sure that UserGate Server and UserGate Administrator are not loaded (press Ctrl+Alt+Del to see all running applications). Install the new version to the same folder as the previous version. Restart your computer. Find out more about licensing of new UserGate versions here.

I am using a trial version. Sometimes when I try to get on the Internet, the following message comes up: "The limit of simultaneously working users has been exceeded. The amount of simultaneously working users depends on the UserGate license type." How can I fix this?

Our trial version (the free version you use to see if you’d like to purchase UserGate) allows only five simultaneous users. That is, only five computers of your local network can work on the Internet at the same time. If you need to test our software on more users, please e-mail us a request for a trial key indicating the number of simultaneous users you require. We will generate a personalized key that will be valid for 1 month, so you will be able to conduct a full test of our software.

Technical questions

I get a "Server not found" error when my programs try to get on the Internet with UserGate, although NAT rules are set up properly. What should I do?

This may happen if DNS is not set up properly. There are two ways to set up DNS:

  1. DNS forwarding:
    • In the General section of the Settings tab enable DNS forwarding.
    • Specify the IP addresses of the DNS servers that will be used (separate each entry with a semi-colon (‘;’) if more than one IP address is entered.
    • On each computer of your network, set the computer’s address with UserGate as a DNS server in each computer’s TCP/IP protocol settings.
    • Also set each computer address with UserGate as a gateway in each computer’s TCP/IP protocol settings for each computer on your network.
  2. Using NAT rules.
    • Make sure that DNS forwarding is disabled (in the General section of the Settings tab).
    • Create a NAT rule called "DNS" with open port 53 and UDP protocol.
    • On each computer of your network, set the DNS servers of your ISP as a DNS server in the TCP/IP protocol settings.
    • On each computer of your network, set each computer’s address with UserGate as a gateway in each computer’s TCP/IP protocol settings.

How do I make my game (bank client application, payment system, etc.) work with UserGate?

You need to find out what port the program is using, create a NAT rule for this port and apply it to the user(s) who will be using that software.

Where are all the UserGate settings stored?

ALL UserGate settings are stored in the file named config.cfg located in the same directory where UserGate is installed. Information is stored in xml format and can be edited with third party software. Unicode encoding is used.

How do I block users from accessing websites with adult or other improper content?

Make a list of words that are typical for this type of content, such as “porn”, “sex”, etc. Create a rule for the object "Connection" with the "Close" action. In the "http" tab of this rule, in the drop-down list, indicate in which part of the URL the specified word is to be searched (e.g. select "entire line"). Then press the "Add" button and type a word from your list, in this case, *sex*. The record will be added to the list of banned URLs. Add each word of your list in the same way, in our example, *porn* would be the next word. Then apply this rule to the appropriate user(s).

Can I limit the Internet connection speed for a specified user?

Yes, this can be done in the user settings located in the Users section. Indicate the maximum speed for incoming and outgoing traffic in KB/sec for the selected user.

How can I enable the ‘ping’ command?

Using the ‘Ping’ commands in UserGate is not possible at the moment, because UserGate does not allow ICMP traffic.

How can I move a user to a different group?

Make sure the group you are going to move the user to does exist. Then go to the User Settings tab and choose the other group in the "Group" drop-down list. Apply your changes.

When I start UserGate I get the error "StartServiceCtrlDispatcher failed, error 0x427".

This error occurs when Usergate is installed as a service, but you are attempting to launch it as a regular program. To start UserGate as a service, type 'net start usergate' in the command line. If you want to start UserGate as a regular program, you need to uninstall the service first.

How do I upgrade from GateWall 3.1 to UserGate 4.X?

To switch from GateWall to Usergate you need to:

  1. Save the file named config.cfg from GateWall’s main directory to another location on your hard drive.
  2. Uninstall GateWall.
  3. Install UserGate.
  4. Move your saved copy of config.cfg to UserGate’s main directory.

The file config.cfg contains your software settings (rules, users, etc). Unfortunately your user statistics will be lost (file log.mdb), because UserGate is built using a new database that is not compatible with GateWall’s, so don't copy the statistics file, as UserGate won't be able to recognize it.
